Leaders on Overcoming Your Shadow Mission

overcoming-showdow-missionReading a book called “Overcoming Your Shadow Mission” by John Ortberg. This is a book for anyone trying to stay focused on their life mission, but it is especially written for leaders. Leaders are people on a mission. They are trying to take people somewhere.

The problem is there are times when leaders (and organizations) pursue something that is not there true mission. It’s like a person in sales who works hard and get’s clients, but only to win the sales award. They cut corners and lie putting the company in jeopardy.

That person is pursuing a “shadow mission” or personal dark agenda that is thwarting the original mission of the company. This can happen to anyone who is more self-focused than other focused! We say we are pursuing God but in reality are just trying to look good for people at church or in our Christian circles. Jesus had a term for that – “whitewashed tombs” Matt. 23:27.

Matthew 23:27-28 (New International Version)

27“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

It happens to churches who say they want to reach non-believers but focus inward on themselves. The Challenge for us all who choose to be followers is to stay true to the real mission.
