About

Rusty Hutson was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1967. He was raised in Montgomery, AL from the age of 5. After attending Trinity Presbyterian school for twelve years, he went on to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia where, in 1989, he received his BA in Fine Art. Upon graduation he went to work for Herff Jones yearbooks and then helped start a new sign business in Montgomery in the spring of 1990. For two years he struggled, believing this was not God’s calling for his life.

Eventually he would discover that God wanted his whole life and career completely devoted to Him, so through the counsel and guidance of his pastors at Frazer United Methodist Church he answered the call to ministry in 1992.

From 1992-1995 Rusty attended Asbury Theological Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a Deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1994 and an Elder in 1998. He is a member of the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference.

His First appointment after seminary was back to his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama to First United Methodist Church. From 1996 until 1999 he served as an Associate Pastor in charge of evangelism, assimilation of new members, men’s ministry and confirmation. In August of 1999 he was appointed to start a new church in the Auburn/ Opelika area and has been there ever since.

Rusty and Becky have been married since 1989. They have 3 boys – Michael, Wesley, and William. They love to camp, bike, go to “the Farm” in south Alabama, fish…basically anything that can be done outdoors! Rusty enjoys golf, hunting, fishing, and Auburn athletics of all kinds. Next to his love for his family and his Lord, Rusty’s passion is for reaching out to the unchurched and nonChristian in the community. This passion has not only helped shape the mission and vision of Cornerstone, but has kept the church reaching out through creativity, innovation, change and new approaches to ministry.
